Anne Klein

Born in Brooklyn in 1923, Hannah Golofski grew up to become the famous fashion designer known as Anne Klein. In 1948 she married clothing manufacturer Ben Klein and became principal designer of Junior Sophisticates, a new company established by her husband.

Anne Klein started her career as a sketcher and started Anne Klein with fashion guru, Gunther Oppenheim. Anne Klein hired the then unknown Donna Karan as her assistant.

Anne Klein won numerous fashion awards. In 1973, she was the only woman invited to participate in a fashion show consisting of five American and five French prominent designers, intended to raise money for renovations at Versailles, France. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York re-staged the American component of this show in 1993.

Anne Klein died of breast cancer in 1974. Donna Karan and Louis Dell”Ollio
took over as head designers until 1984. Anne Klein and Co. is now owned by Jones Apparel Group.
