Born in Brooklyn to an observant Jewish family, Issac Mizrahi was a creative child. His father bought him a sewing machine at the age of ten. His fashion has a flair for the dramatic, dating back to his childhood when he created puppet shows in his parents’ garage.

Mizrahi graduated from Parsons School of Design and later worked in the studios of Perry Ellis, Jeffrey Banks and Calvin Klein. He launched his eponymous label at the age of 27.

Issac Mizrahi became an overnight sensation, winning the best newcomer award in 1988 and the 1989 award for best women’s designer from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). He went on to win CFDA’s prized Designer of the Year award three times.

Mizrahi closed his company due to financial difficulties. However, he gained success with a landmark deal with Target and a license for clothing, accessories and home decor for Xcel brands.

Mizrahi has a weekly QVC show and has appeared as a judge on Project Runway: All Stars. His work will be featured next month at New York’s Jewish Museum.
