The great and talented fashion designer Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic to middle class parents in 1932.  Oscar de la Renta left his family in 1950 to study art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.  Oscar joined the couture house of Lanvin-Castillo and began his official career in fashion design a decade later. He moved to New York City and designed for Elizabeth Arden before launching his own signature clothing line in 1965.

Oscar de la Renta won the Coty Fashion Award for two consecutive years and was inducted to the Coty Hall of Fame in 1973. He served as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and in 1977 launched Oscar, a ladies perfume that became a best seller.  In 1993 he became the first American designer to design for a French couture house when he was recruited by The Balmain House in Paris. Oscar dressed many First Ladies as well as celebrities. He designed the wedding gown of President George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna and the wedding dress of Amal Clooney.  Oscar de la Renta passed away in October 2014.
